Om du har försökt ta bort bakgrund från en signatur tidigare, har du troligtvis stött på den där rektangeln. Att måla pappret vitt löser det inte. Papprets pixlar måste bli helt transparenta, så att linjerna flyter över allt som ligger under dem: en streckad linje, en mörk slid, en varumärkesfärg.
Det är mät bart, så vi mätte det on. Den 10 september 2026 körde vi en handskriven signatur och en line-art-logo genom en gratis webbläsarbaserad verkyg, one läste sedan utdata pixel för pixel i Python. 98,38 % av signaturens pixlar och 98,19 % av logodnsens kom medving alpha-noll, och det öppna utrymme inne i bokstäverna och ringen var också transparent. En transparent PNG lagrar per pixel ett fjärde värde, bredvid red, green och blue. Detta alfa-varied löper from been 0 – helt enkelt, till 255 – helt opak. 98,38% of the signature file are wholly transparent. 0,43% of it is ink. The remaining one, 0,92% is partially opacity: a border zone of one to three black of the pixel that gives the edge of each stroke a soft tone to avoid hard edges.
Those edge pixel data still have a little of the paper’s lights, which appears as a faint white border at 400% on a dark background but is completely invisible at normal.
Two notes on the test itself. The input was an AIrendered image of a signature on off-white paper instead of a phone photo, so the paper tone was chosen deliberately; a real photo has its own variables, we cover later. The processing went into the browser; during our test the page continued to work without an internet connection, which is useful when a client signs. The same model, in other runs, handled a group photo, a portrait of a dog, a product shot with its shadow, and a white shirt against a white wall – so a signature on paper is well inside its area.
How to get the background from a logo without filling the letters
A logo from a designer usually comes as a JPG file with a white background or as a PNG that someone has already flattened. Web screenshots are even worse: small, compressed, and often placed on a colored header.
The task is the same as with a name sign, with an extra requirement. The open space inside the letters and shapes also needs to be removed. Otherwise you get a logo that has no background on the outside, but a paper plate in the inside of a O.
Our test logo was a line-art emblem, a ring with text, also AI-generated input on off-white paper. The output was 98.19% fully transparent, 0.62% ink and 0.91% edge band. Inside the ring, 86% of pixels were pure alpha Zero, 4% are strokes inside a mountain and a sun, and the rest is soft edge around the strokes – so the interior is open, not a paper disk. Placed on a colored background, the color shows through the ring and between the letters – exactly what a transparent logo is supposed to do.
If the only copy you is an old screenshot, upscale it first before removing anything. The AI reads the edges; a 200pixel logo gives it little to drink.

One lp on limitations: a transparent logotype maker (pl) constructs a new design from scratch and exports it without background. This guide covers what you already have.
And an extra detail for anyone who writes scripts to check output. In our files, the solid ink has alpha 254, not 255. That is 99.6% opaque, invisible when used, and only matters if coding checks exactly 255.
Removing the white background from a logo get doesn’t eat thin lines.
Thin strokes are where do the removal goes first wrong. A threshold tool that selects white and deletes it eats into light grey antialiasing and makes the lines shiny. A segmentator model works the other way around: it decides what is ink and then feathers the boundary.
In the logo output, the feathered band is one to three pixels wide. At 400% on teal, it is read as a thin edge slightly lighter than the background because the soft pixels retain some of the paper’s tone: at 100% it disappears. The hairline strokes and thick-to-thin variation in text came through unharmed.
Two limits before you assume more. Soft drop shadows and glows we did not test; after another run, a semi-transparent cover kept its shape but lost its transparency and came out opaque, with only 0.73% of its pixels partially translucent. A soft shadow becomes solid or disappears entirely rather than fades. The other limit is format. A transparent PNG is still a raster image. A vinyl cutter, a large banner, and an embroidery shop require a vector, and background removal does not produce one – that’s a separate step. For raster print, check in advance that the pixel count matches the intended print size. In our guide increase DPI takes you through those calculations.
How to shoot a signature for a clean cutout
The model does the removal. The photo decides how much there is to remove around. Our AI has generated an input using non-white on purpose and the paper still came away cleanly; so a warm white is fine. Saturation and clutter are the problematic.

A single habit covers most of this: take a photo of the signature as if it were a document to read. Flat, bright, nothing overlapping.
Other transparents ways: Word and Canva
If the signature is going straight into Word, or the letter already in Canva, both apps have built-in. Each has a catch you should know before beginning.
Make Signature transparent in Word (Picture Format tab)
Word own remover is a two-pass tool – automatic guess and then correction by pencil. Microsoft's support describes the path:
- Insert a photo and select it. Double click if the Picture Format tab does not show.
- Select Picture Format > Remove Background. Word colors to be removed magenta.
- Where is wrong, use Mark Areas to Keep / Mark Areas to Remove with the pencil.
- Click Keep Changes. To get a separate file, right-click on picture, Save as Picture, and save as PNG.
The pencil step exists because the automatic removal is a guess, and a signature’s thin discontinuous strokes give it plenty to guess about. Budget a few extra minutes. That same page points out that for vector files such as SVG, AI, WMF, and DRW, “background removal is not possible” and the button is grayed out.
Making logo transparent in Canva (only on paid plans)
Canva’s route is short. Upload logo into a design, choose it, choose Edit image, then BG Remover under Magic Studio, then download as PNG. Canva’s own logo background removal page describes it one click and that’s true for a clear logo on white.
The catch is the plan. The Canva Help Center, dated September 10 of 2026, says: “Background Remover is included in paid plans.” And the same help center adds “BG Remover works only for images small than 9 MB” and that a larger image is “downscaled to 10 MP after removal.” For tiny logos these limits rarely matter, but for print resolution file, exception 2 and 3 matter.

Use Transparent Signature in Word, Google Docs, PDF
Now PNG is ready. It is time to sit on a line and not interrupt layout.
In Word, insert it as a picture and select wrapping – “in front of text”. You can add it across the line and resize with corner handle – holding shift to keep aspect ratio, otherwise strokes distort.
Google Docs: Google Help says Go to Insert > Image > upload from computer, open Image options and select “In front of text”. Important from that page: “This is not available in docs in pageless format”; layout options appear only in Page view. Use you must switch.
For PDF, many editors use add image or stamp. Transparency is preserved as long as the app keeps PNG and does not flatten when opening. So always check it in form field or a background color before sending.
After a file is on doc, two additional questions. Legal and safe. On the first, US federal law defines an electronic signature wide: 15 U.S.C § 7006(5) reads: “an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other the record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign.”
A placed image with intention to sign fits that. Whether the opposite party accepts a pasted image or only wants an e-signature service with an audit trail, it’s their call and sometimes the regulator’s – so ask before. It’s general information, not legal advice.
Second: A clean, transparent signature was easy to share, which is the point but also risk. Keep your PNG from shared drives, do not post it, consider keeping the working file in one place you can control.
FAQ
Is a transparent signature legally binding?
Yes under the US federal definition for an e-signature, if placed with intention sign. In all cases the other side also must, depending on the legal document or jurisdiction – confirm before using it on something important.
Why does my add-on have a white background after I save?
Usually because some step saved it to JPG. JPG doesn’t support transparency, so the background becomes white. Instead export PNG, and test in dark part of the document – white blocks disappear in plain white.
Can I delete white background from a logo that is already white?
AI separates by shape not color. In our tests a white shirt on white wall came out exactly, but we have not tested a white logo specifically. Practical problem then: the white logo will become a transparent background disappears on a white page, so preview on dark and with dark-ink version for white layout.
Does transparent PNG work for print?
For digital context, yes. The model has pixel dimension and print size conditions. For cutting on vinyl, embroidery, large size, the production company will generally prefer vector – which this process does not produce.
Do online tools shrink the image?
Some decrease. Remove.bg says in their help that the sample output is 0.25 Megapixel, and Canva says 10 MP. In our test on Sept 10, 2026 we in Chrome–Windows 6000×3375 gave with Atlas Cloud the same 6000×3375.
Is this tool free and no account?
Yes. The Atlas Cloud tool says no account needed, no card, no watermark, and you can do any number of photos. We did not test the photo limit; it’s the page’s own claim.
Conclusion: The gray rectangle on the line is a file format issue, not a skill problem.
Once paper pixels are zero, alpha and the file stays PNG, signature will sit on any surface; same for logo, even in the open areas. The measured part it has: 98.38% and 98.17% fully transparent, with a soft edge of one–three pixels that has a hint of the original paper – invisible normal size.
Take plain paper, dark pen, process one click in AI tool on, save PNG, place it. Even You can use Word or paid Canva – with the boundaries above. Any of the three can remove the background from a signature or logo via until there are lines and colors. The difference is the amount of extra cleaning you doing later and it survives all the transfer as a true PNG.
